BY ANDY ROWER | MIRROR SPORTS — Junior Zach Marvin scored three goals while leading Maumee’s hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Whitmer at Bowling Green State University’s Slater Family Ice Arena on December 15.
The game started out as a defensive battle, with strong play coming from Maumee’s Zach Marvin, junior Kenlyn Foster, sophomore Brett Birt and freshman Derek Marvin and Whitmer’s Robbie Adler and Elijah Gilbert.
After five early misses, though, Derek Marvin eventually scored the contest’s first goal on an assist from Birt with 5:52 remaining in the opening period.
Whitmer’s Drew Dillon, Jake Gignac and Mitchell Relford went on to outshoot Birt and Zach Marvin 5-2 through the rest of the stanza, but Maumee junior goalkeeper Roby Fairchild kept the shutout intact.
Zach Marvin next scored his first goal on assists from Birt and Derek Marvin just 27 seconds into the second period and Derek Marvin pushed the score to 3-0 about 2:00 later on a steal, miss, rebound and putback goal.
The next few minutes saw a continuation of strong defensive play from Foster and Whitmer’s Jo Wester, but Zach Marvin ultimately converted his second goal on Birt’s third assist of the night at the 8:44 mark.
Whitmer’s Relford, Bren-dan Bernath and Conner Savidge then matched Maumee’s Marvin brothers with four attempts before finally managing to avoid a shutout when Noah Zimmerman scored on an assist from Bernath with 2:00 left in the second.
Despite a combined seven more shots by Maumee’s Birt and Derek and Zach Marvin, the score remained at 4-1 until Zach Marvin completed his hat trick on an assist from Foster with 5:53 left in the contest.
Both teams got about five final looks at the net as the clock wound down, but Maumee’s Fairchild and Foster and Whitmer’s Wester and goalie Justin Kolb ensured that none found their mark.
Maumee ended up outshooting Whitmer 34-24, with the Marvin brothers combining for 24 attempts and Birt adding four more.
Relford paced Whitmer with seven shots and Gignac and Wester posted four more each.
Whitmer’s Kolb racked up 24 saves on the night and got additional defensive help from Hunter Zimmerman, and Fairchild went 23-for-24 in the Maumee net.
Maumee also got solid play from freshman Owen Grycza and improved to 2-5-2 after totaling 15 goals during its last two games.
The Panthers will square off against Lake at Slater Family Ice Arena on Friday, December 21 at 6:00 p.m.
