BY KRISTI FISH | MIRROR REPORTER — The Shelly Company’s Stoneco Maumee Quarry will host a free open house on Saturday, August 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., rain or shine.
The annual event allows residents the opportunity to explore an often-unseen area of the city and enjoy a variety of activities.
“This is about community service and community interaction,” said Tim Rowan, The Shelly Company vice president and general manager of the northwest division. “Even though the quarry is in the center of Maumee, a lot of times, people don’t even know it’s there.”
Employees will be hosting tours, bringing attendees down into the quarry and answering questions during the open house.
They’ll explain the purpose of the company and what happens inside the quarry and provide an up-close look at the day-to-day operations.
“This is strictly an opportunity to be a good neighbor and bring the community together,” Rowan said.
Over the years, the event has increased in popularity, Rowan added, with approximately 1,200 people attending last year’s open house.
Many people from last year’s event also left with free T-shirts, which the business is hoping to provide again this year in addition to several other giveaways and raffle prizes.
Guests will have the chance to guess the weight of a boulder on-site for the chance at an Amazon gift card and enter into drawings throughout the open house.
Other activities will include a crack-the-geode station and pet rocks for young residents.
“We’ll have food like hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and soda,” Rowan shared. “Everything is absolutely free.”
Safety of the guests in attendance at the event is important, Rowan noted.
Attendees are asked to dress appropriately for the open house. Closed-toe shoes are suggested, as well as weather-appropriate attire as the event will take place rain or shine.
Additionally, to minimize the walking attendees will have to do, employees will have golf carts to pick up and drop off guests at their vehicles.
“We’re just excited to have everyone come out and visit us,” Rowan said.
Stoneco Maumee Quarry is located at 1360 Ford St. in Maumee. The open house will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 19.
