Byron Reed

Byron Gaylord “Sam” Reed, 83, of Monclova, passed away on December 31 at his home surrounded by family.

Born on July 29, 1939 to Gaylord and Ruth Reed in Toledo, he married Joyce (Stykemain) on April 29, 1961 in Toledo, and she survives him.

Sam owned and operated Reebar Die Casting in Waterville, which was founded in 1972 together with his father and a partner. In 1977, upon his father’s death, he took a risk leaving a steady job as a machine repairman for Ford Motor Company and went all in to build Reebar into a successful business that just celebrated its 50th year. His only son, Byron, joined the family business in 1996 and continues to operate it today.

Over many years, Sam and his wife built a beautiful homestead including barns, pastures and bridges along Swan Creek. He enjoyed farming the land along his property.

On most Friday and Saturday summer nights, you could find Sam at area dirt tracks along with his son Byron and their sprint car crew. Together they built a team that won many races and championships at Attica Raceway and Fremont Speedway in Ohio. In June 2021, together with his wife, Sam was inducted into the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame as a car owner. Some of his favorite moments were talking with other car owners and racers at the track.

Sam is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joyce; his son Byron (Kelly) Reed; grandsons, Sam and Luke; and sister, Judy Smith.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Friday, January 6 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Peinert Dunn Funeral Home, 6630 Providence St., Whitehouse. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home followed by burial at Roth Cemetery in Monclova.
