BY KAREN GERHARDINGER | MIRROR REPORTER — Rob Herron prides himself on putting his customers to sleep.
Opening the door to the Dream Room at the back of Herron’s Amish Furniture, the owner of the Napoleon family business revealed a fully outfitted bedroom with a TV, ambient light and sound system.
“We want our customers to be confident that they’re choosing the right mattress, so in here they can try one in privacy before buying. We’ll bring in any mattress they want,” Rob said.
Like all of the indoor and outdoor furnishings at Herron’s, the 20 different quality mattress sets are all Amish-made.
Yes, Rob conceded, people equate Amish work with well-built furniture, but it’s so much more.
“The Amish share our core values of excellence, integrity, family and faith,” he said.
While the family business was founded in 1986 as an antique store, by the next decade, a solid partnership with the Amish was formed, for several reasons.
“It’s much better craftsmanship, and you can customize everything,” Rob said. “At a big box, you can’t pick out the wood, color, hardware or even size. Customization is huge for us, because not all homes are the same size or style.”
While Amish furniture used to be known for its traditional styles, today’s designs feature clean lines in both contemporary and traditional looks, whether in the kitchen, living room, dining room, bedroom, home office, nursery or patio.
The custom-made kitchen cabinets feature self-close drawers and doors that are flush-fit, with hundreds of options for wood, style and hardware, all in a 10- to 12-week turnaround, including installation. Bring in dimensions and ideas from magazines or Pinterest and the designers will get to work.
“We’ve done cabinets for schools, colleges, city buildings and businesses as well as residential,” Rob said.
Herron’s is a destination. With dining table sets, bedroom collections, home office furniture, entertainment stands and end tables, Herron’s has an enormous inventory of furnishings that makes it worth the drive.
All furniture is stain-resistant to hazards such as water glass rings, alcohol or fingernail polish remover.
“Amish craftsmanship is high quality and value, not particle board. It’s all made in the USA,” Rob said.
The Amish workmanship that goes into wood furnishings applies to upholstery and mattresses, where quality materials and methods are used to ensure a solid product that will last for decades.
Herron’s added Amish mattresses eight years ago, after the well-known brand they carried began cutting production costs – which cut the quality and life span of the product.
Herron’s mattresses are comprised of high-density foam, resulting in just a half-inch of body impression in 20 years, where others may see body impressions of up to an inch or more within a few years, Rob said. The Amish also use an offset coil that allows the mattress to conform best to the body while resisting sinking, which can cause lower back strain.
Providing customers with the highest value and quality in furnishings is at the core of Herron’s, and it extends beyond the home interior to outdoor furniture, sheds, barns, play sets, patio furniture and even deer blinds.
The poly outdoor furniture, including Adirondack chairs, tables and bars, won’t easily fade, mold or blow away in the wind, and can be left outdoors all winter.
Gazebos, pergolas and sheds can be customized. Made of high-quality siding, the Amish sheds feature piano hinges on doors and baked-on paint. These can be delivered ready to use or, if needed, built on-site. A time-lapse video on the Herron’s website shows a large shed being built, start to finish, in approximately six hours.
“Often customers make the trip to Herron’s just for a shed, play set or gazebo. However, when they come inside they’re so impressed with the vast selection of quality furniture that’s so beautifully displayed that they then become lifelong customers,” Rob said.
Herron’s is located at 2250 Scott St. in Napoleon, just 25 minutes southwest of Maumee on US 24. The store is open Monday through Saturday, but closed on Sunday for family, faith and friends.
