Eric Board, Abi Smalley Lead Maumee At Mel Brodt Invitational

BY ANDY ROWER | MIRROR SPORTS — Maumee’s cross country teams kicked September off by competing at the Mel Brodt Invitational at Bowling Green State University last Saturday.


Freshman Eric Board and senior Chris Witzler led the Panthers on the day by placing 31st and 32nd out of 225 runners with times of 18:51 and 18:52, respectively.

Freshman Nick Johnstone next placed 38th at 19:22, senior Robert East finished 48th with a 20:28 and junior Sam Sherf took 57th at 21:34.

Freshman Robbie Stevens rounded team scoring out with a 64th-place time of 24:21 and classmate Tylar Menning ended up 68th at 31:36.

St. Francis senior Andrew Schuster took top individual honors with a time of 16:27 and Perrysburg senior Zachary Shultz led all Northern Lakes League runners with a second-place time of 16:39.

The Yellow Jackets won the event with 26 team points, Southview placed second at 71 and Anthony Wayne took third with 88.

St. Francis (93), Fremont Ross (114) and Bowling Green (143) also finished ahead of Maumee, whose 206 points allowed it to better Bowsher (253), Clyde (254) and Start (281).


Sophomore Abi Smalley paced the Panthers girls team by placing 48th out of 173 competitors with a time of 25:23.

Maumee’s next five runners all finished in the 26s, as senior Jordan Saleh (26:09) finished 52nd, freshman Amelia Collins (26:40) placed 54th, junior Jordan Leasor (26:41.03) took 56th, sophomore Lexi Szyndler (26:41.83) ended up 57th and freshman Sydney King (26:58) contributed a 59th-place time.

Another freshman, Cam-ryn O’Shea, closed things out for the Panthers with a 27:14.

Notre Dame junior Lauren Mick won the race with a time of 19:22 and Northview freshman Sarah Ahrendt led all NLL runners by placing fourth at 20:07.

Anthony Wayne took top team honors with 46 points, Notre Dame placed second at 64 and Perrysburg finished third with 71.

Northview (93), South-view (120), Bowling Green (150), Fremont Ross (189) and Start (247) also finished ahead of the Panthers, who bettered Bowsher, 267-303.

Maumee will next travel to Hedges-Boyer Park to take part in the Tiffin Carnival on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
