BY NANCY GAGNET | MIRROR REPORTER — In between the raindrops of late, the sun is still shining this summer, which means pool season is here.
To serve the needs of area pool and spa owners, Clearwater Pools and Spas has recently opened a new location in the Golden Gate Plaza in Maumee. With one other location in Findlay, Clearwater Pools and Spas sells hot tubs and above-ground pools as well as pool and spa supplies.
In 2015, business owner Joe Ramirez opened his first pool shop in Findlay as a complementary venture to his thriving lawn care business. The increasing number of clients asking for pool services along with their lawn prompted him to do it.
“I went through a lot of training and I learned a lot,” he said.
The first two years proved challenging, but as he acquired a better understanding of the industry as well as marketing, things began to click. Eventually, he closed his lawn service business and focused all of his attention on pools and spas.
“We still do training. We don’t get too comfortable. There’s a lot of figuring stuff out, but we do pretty good,” he said.
Clearwater carries a full line of Cal Spa and Hawaiian Breeze hot tubs and above ground pools.
“Most everything we sell is made in the U.S.A. and we try to support local companies. With our pools, we offer the liners from Findlay Vinyl,” Ramirez said.
The store is stocked with a range of pool accessories and Dolphin and Frog pool supplies. Both in-ground and above-ground pools are serviced, and if requested, Clearwater can convert a chlorine pool to a saltwater pool. Chemical-free systems, such as ozone or ultraviolet systems, are also offered.
With seven pool technicians on staff, Clearwater provides a full line of pool and spa services to both commercial and residential clients. The staff can provide routine maintenance service or as needed at the beginning and end of the seasons.
Free water testing is always available and Clearwater also hosts free classes in the offseason to explain the chemistry associated with owning and operating a pool.
“Pools are fun, but we’ve got to make sure that we are taking care of them the right way because they are not fun if you don’t,” Ramirez said.
While Ramirez had been servicing customers in the Maumee area for many years, he opened the Maumee store just before Memorial Day to better serve his clients, which range from southern Michigan to Columbus.
“I’ve always liked Maumee. I like the area and the people are nice. There are a lot of people around and a lot of stuff to do,” he said.
