AW Softballers Get Revenge On Springfield, Lima Senior

BY HAILEY MALLENDICK | MIRROR SPORTS — The Generals were finally back in action last week after a brief weather hiatus.

Anthony Wayne got a redemption win over Springfield on May 6 and then two days later defeated Lima Senior in the Division I sectional tournament.

AW 3, Springfield 0

Springfield traveled to Anthony Wayne’s home turf for the Northern Lakes League match-up. 

The last time the teams faced off, the Blue Devils eked out a 1-0 win in a pitchers’ duel and handed the Generals their only league loss of the season. 

This time, however, Anthony Wayne came out victorious with senior Jenna Hardy pitching all seven innings, getting 12 strikeouts and allowing only three hits, one walk and no runs. 

The Generals scored a run in the bottom of the second, fourth and sixth innings.

Freshman Kennedy Cowan had only one hit in the game, but she made it count. The ball sailed over the left-field fence for the lone home run in the sixth.

Senior Cailey Miller went 2-for-3 with two singles, an RBI and a run. Sophomore Hannah Pfundt was credited with the third RBI following a 2-for-3 performance that included a single and a double.

Senior Makayla Cowan hit once and scored the third run for AW and senior Maddie Rios had the last hit.

The Blue Devils’ Taylor Turner almost matched Hardy in strikeouts with 11 of her own while allowing six hits and three runs. 

Springfield had its trio of hits from Alexia Orner, Taylor Bombick and P.J. Turner. Aylssa Grajczk had the lone walk in the game

Anthony Wayne improved to 6-1 in the league with the win. 

AW 22, Lima 0

Sophomore Lauren Curry shined as she pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Generals hosted Lima Senior for the sectional championship game. 

The Generals had an impressive first inning with 13 runs followed by three in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth. 

Curry also had an impressive game at the plate with five RBI, one hit, a double and three walks. Miller followed with four RBI of her own as well as a run, two hits, two doubles and a walk. 

Kennedy Cowan added two RBI along with three runs, one hit, a single and three walks. 

Juniors Jade Ramer (three runs, hit, single, two walks) and Maddie Hines (run, two hits, two singles, walk) along with Pfundt (run, hit, double, two walks) each added an RBI to the effort. 

Seniors Alyssa Ansara (walk) and Larissa Payeff (walk) each added one run. Sophomore Chloe Carpen-ter (hit, single, two walks) added two runs.

Lima’s Lily Buchanan recorded only one strikeout and allowed 13 hits, 21 earned runs and 22 walks. 

The only hit for Lima came from Mo Twinning. 

The sectional victory brought AW’s record to 15-3 overall.
