AW Junior High Girls Claim State Championship

BY J. PATRICK EAKEN | MIRROR SPORTS — The Anthony Wayne Junior High School girls track team shared a state championship with Pick-erington Ridgeview at Lancaster High School.

In the Ohio High School Athletic Association-spon-sored event, AW and Ridgeview both scored 30 points to beat second-place Euclid Central (25).

Gahanna West (22) was third, followed by a tie between Olentangy Orange and Gahanna South (20) and a tie between Perrysburg and Toledo Washington (16).

Eighth-grader Jenna Rybicki was AW’s top individual placer, finishing second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches.

Rybicki was just 4 inches behind Arlington seventh-grader Karis Willow, the state champion at 5-6.

The Generals’ Sophia Schneider finished sixth in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:01.26.

AW’s 400 relay team of Brynn Gardner, Mason Barrow, Schneider and Ella Rice finished second with a time of 51.83. Ridgeview had the state champion team, finishing in 51.12, just more than half a second ahead of the Generals quad.

The 800 relay team of Gardner, Barrow, Mallori Pollock and Carli Miller finished fourth in 1:50.25.

The 1600 relay team of Payton Miller, Pollock, Carli Miller and Schneider finished third in 4:17.18.

The girls also won the Northern Lakes League junior high meet, which took place on May 5 at Napoleon. The AW boys finished third.

The AW girls team scored 135 points to outdistance Perrysburg (112.5), Maumee Gateway (62.5), Timberstone (60), Napoleon (56), McCord (47), Bowling Green (32), Springfield (23.5) and Arbor Hills (17).
