Lady Generals Sweep Through Panthers, Trojans

BY SCOTT CALHOUN — MIRROR SPORTS
The Anthony Wayne softball team used its mighty power stroke to club visiting Whitmer 7-1 last Sunday.
In their second game of a doubleheader, however, the Lady Generals needed a mighty stroke of luck against Findlay to come away with a 4-3 win.
AW 7, Whitmer 1
Against Whitmer, the Generals got back-to-back home runs from junior second baseman Samantha Hamann and senior third baseman Sam Kolling to lead off the fourth inning.
With those two dingers, Anthony Wayne increased its team total to 20 on the season, good for second most in a season among all divisions of OHSAA sanctioned high school softball in Ohio, according to the OHSAA record books.
In the 7-1 whipping of the Panthers, freshman Emily Kurfis pitched seven innings for the complete-game victory. She struck out nine Whitmer batters. Hayly Erdman took the loss for Whitmer.
Hamann finished 2-for-4 with the home run, a single and two runs scored. Kolling went 2-for-4 with her homer. Senior Michelle Manley also batted 2-for-4, scoring two runs.
AW 4, Findlay 3
The Generals trailed the Trojans 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, but capitalized on a dropped fly ball in right field with two outs, a critical error that paved the way for three runs for AW.
The Trojans’ Kelly Walton battled AW sophomore starting hurler Dani Haley to a 1-1 draw through the game’s first five innings.
Findlay drew first blood in the third when Maggie Gilliland’s one-out single off the right-field fence just missed being a home run, and instead resulted in an RBI that gave the Trojans a 1-0 edge.
It took the potent Generals offense 11 outs to finally plate a run, something sophomore Kelly Hensley brought to fruition with an RBI bloop single to right with two outs in the fourth, tying the score at 1-1.
Findlay looked to take command of the game in the sixth.
Katey Crow drew a leadoff walk, and Haley then plunked Nicole Lahey. Shelby Treece then executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move her teammates over to second and third with one out.
Katie Miller followed with a grounder toward first, and junior first baseman Alyssa Hoot fielded the ball, but hesitated in choosing her throwing target. That allowed Crow to come home with the go-ahead run.
A rundown ensued with Emily Warnimont at the plate, but the Generals bungled the play and a third run sneaked in as a result.
Haley and her teammates escaped the inning without further damage, but trailed 3-1 against Walton and an outfield defense that had done an excellent job of shutting them down.
Senior shortstop Becky Gill gave AW immediate hope with a leadoff single to left in the bottom of the frame.
The hope nearly died with a line-out by Haley and a foul pop-out by senior Brittany Zickafoose, but with two outs and Gill planted on first, Hensley sent a line single to left.
Stephanie Baker then hit a fly into shallow right that the fielder dropped with the game on the line, and the error allowed Gill to score to make it 3-2.
Junior catcher Jen Marzec then reached safely on another Findlay error, and a near comedy of errors ensued that allowed Hensley and Baker to come home with the tying and go-ahead runs.
Up 4-3, Haley allowed a Trojans single in the seventh, but no further damage took place and the Lady Generals escaped with the win to go to 16-4 on the season.
Hensley was the key bat for AW. She went 3-for-3 at the plate with the only RBI for the Generals.
Haley gave up just three hits and one earned run. She walked four Lady Trojans and struck out five.
