Ecumenical Bereavement Support Group To Meet

The Ecumenical Bereavement Support Group will meet on Tuesday, September 7 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Parish, 4201 Heatherdowns Boulevard, in the Emmaus Room. Free Programs Benefit Those New To Alzheimers

Individuals with early stage memory loss with their families and friends are invited to attend a free programs for social and educational opportunities and group sharing.  This series called, “Transitions,” is hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter.

Upcoming  program dates are Wednesday, September 8 from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.  “Mind Works,” Wednesday, September 15 from 4:00 – :00 p.m., “Art Café,” and Thursday, September 30 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Topic to be announced.

 Persons who are experiencing forgetfulness, mild confusion, or difficulty finding the right words are most likely to benefit from this program. The Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter, is offering a FREE four-part series for those in the early stages of memory loss entitled, “An Early Stage Workshop for Persons with Memory Loss.” The series will be presented on Thursdays, September 9, 16, 23 and 30th from 6:30pm-8:00pm at the Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter office at 2500 North Reynolds Road. 

This series will discuss memory loss issues, everyday coping skills, legal and financial concerns, building a support system and hope for the future.  The person who is experiencing memory loss is welcome to invite one or more family members or friends to attend with him or her.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease of the brain which destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer’s can be fatal and today is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States.  There are more than 5.3 million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease, and someone develops Alzheimer’s disease every 70 seconds. There are more than 32,000 people in Northwest Ohio with the disease.

TMA Offers Program With Alzheimer Association

Meet Me at TMA is a monthly program held on the first Saturday of every month, from 1:30–2:30 p.m.  This program is hosted by the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA), in cooperation with the Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter and features interactive tours led by specially trained Museum docents who engage participants in lively dialogue, as art can be a rich and satisfying experience while providing stimulation to people with Alzheimer’s disease. 

 The Meet Me at TMA program features selected works from the Museum collection. Presentations are tailored to individuals who are experiencing forgetfulness, mild confusion or difficulty finding the right words, along with their family members and caregivers.  Each month different works are chosen as a focal point of the visit. 

There will be a date change for September’s program it will be changed to the second Saturday of the month.  On Saturday, September 11, 2010 the theme will be Behind-the-Scenes Tour.  This tour, led by Steve Nowak, director of Education and Community Outreach at the Toledo Museum of Art, we will take a peek at objects not seen by the casual visitor.

 Admissions to the Museum and to this special program are free. The Museum is located at 2445 Monroe Street at Scottwood Avenue, just west of the downtown business district and one block off I-75 with exit designations posted.  The entrance and main parking lot are on Grove Place behind the main Museum building.   The Museum galleries are fully accessible and free wheelchairs are available at each entrance. Parking is free for Toledo Museum of Art members and $5.00 for non-members.  Financial assistance for parking can be provided by the Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter on the day of the tour for those in need.  Meet at the visitor’s information desk just inside the Grove Place entrance to the main Museum building.

“After Your Parent Dies” Grief Group To Meet

Hospice of Northwest Ohio will offer support sessions for adults who are mourning the loss of one or both parents. This four-week group, “After Your Parent Dies,” will meet on Mondays, September 13 through October 4, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Hospice of Northwest Ohio’s Toledo Center, 800 S. Detroit Ave.

The series is free and open to any adult in the community, whether or not they have had a prior relationship with Hospice of Northwest Ohio; however, pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, call (419) 661-4001.

Lutheran Village Wolf Creek Plans Diabetes Seminar

Lutheran Village at Wolf Creek will host a free diabetes seminar on Thursday, September 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel.  Marilyn Bame, R.D, LD, CDE dietician from St. Luke’s Diabetes Care Center, will be the speaker. Toledo NICU Patient Reunion Announced

Former patients of the Toledo Children’s Hospital newborn intensive care unit and their families are invited to join staff members for a day of fun and fellowship on Sunday, September 19. Crafts, refreshments and entertainment will be provided. Blood Donors Eligible To Win Harley-Davidson

Individuals who donate blood at a Red Cross blood drive through September 26 will have the chance to win a Harley-Davidson Sportster from Napoleon Harley-Davidson. This sweepstakes is open to anyone who is at least 18 years of age and comes to donate blood or platelets in the American Red Cross Western Lake Erie Region. Centennial Celebration Planned At Flower Hospital

Flower Hospital will host a community celebration in honor of its 100th anniversary on Sunday, October 10 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The event will include campus tours, re-enactments of the hospital’s history, health screenings and kids’ activities. One-Hour CPR Class Offered By Red Cross

The Greater Toledo Area Chapter of the American Red Cross will offer “CPR for Everyone,” a one-hour CPR overview, on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The fee is $10.00 and includes a take-home kit. The class will take place at the chapter headquarters at 3100 W. Central Ave. Pre-registration is required, call (419) 329-2183.

Alzheimer’s Association Offers Free Helpline

The Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio chapter, operates a free helpline 24 hours a day, seven days a week in 140 languages. Staff is available to help with questions about Alzheimer’s disease or memory loss, medications and treatment options, brain health and care options, caregiving tips and respite care options, services available in the community and/or referrals. The toll-free number is (800) 272-3900. The association is also available online at www.alz.org/nwohio, or e-mail alzheimersnwo@alz.org.

Free Alzheimer’s Care Consultation Available

Consultation is a free service offered by the Alzheimer’s Association to individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease or a related memory loss disorder. One-on-one meetings to discuss individualized needs can take place in a person’s home, in a neutral setting or at the Alzheimer’s Association office. An Alzheimer’s Association staff member can provide education, discuss options for the future, assist families in defining goals and provide information on available community resources.

 “For Men Only” Alzheimer’s Program Announced

“For Men Only,” a program for men who are caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, meets at the Alzheimer’s Association office at 2500 N. Reynolds Rd., Toledo. The program takes place on the first Thursday of each month from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Topics include communication, challenging behaviors and progression of the disease. Low Vision Support Group Meets Monthly

The Maumee Senior Center hosts a low vision support group the first Tuesday of each month from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at 2430 S. Detroit Ave., Maumee.

The purpose of the low vision support group is to maximize the independence of those with low vision through education and support. Low vision includes any visual impairment not corrected by standard eyeglasses, contact lenses, medication or surgery that interferes with the ability to perform everyday activities. Exercise Program Offered For Alzheimer’s Patients

The Alzheimer’s Association offers the Reducing Disability in Alzheimer’s Disease, or RDAD program, to help individuals with memory problems as well as their family members who are caring for them.

A trained professional will come to the home for 15 one-hour sessions to teach exercises to help improve strength and balance. Professionals will also teach family members how to assist their relative with these exercises. Family members will also be asked to keep a record of their relatives’ exercise progress and to complete three brief surveys. All information will be kept confidential.

Hospice Hosts Grief Support Group For Children

The Kids Grief Support Group, an interactive grief support group for children, meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Hospice of Northwest Ohio’s Toledo Center. Using art, music, storytelling, discussion and play, groups are available for children ages 5-11 and 12-16. A parent or guardian must stay at the Hospice Center while the child is attending the support group. Gynecological Cancer Support Group Planned

Getting Ovar It, a gynecological cancer support group for women who currently have or who have had a gynecological cancer, meets the third Thursday of the month from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Meetings take place at Flower Hospital in the Hickman Cancer Center conference room.

Teleconferencing is offered for anyone who would like to participate in a meeting, but is not able to attend. The toll-free number is (866) 248-0556.

Adult Grief Group Meets At Toledo Hospice Center

Hospice of Northwest Ohio offers an ongoing, interactive grief support group for adults who are adjusting to the loss of any loved one. The group meets 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month at the Toledo Hospice Center.

The group is free and open to any adult; however, pre-registration is required. Call (419) 661-4001 for more information or to register.

The Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter, offers support group meetings for caregivers of those with memory loss. The meetings are free and open to the public.

Hospice Provides Grief Group For Young Families

Hospice of Northwest Ohio offers a grief support group for those who have experienced the death of a spouse or partner early in life. Sessions are held simultaneously for adults as well as children ages 5 to 13 years. The group meets from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Toledo Hospice Center.
