Daniel Alvin Nelson, age 62, of Toledo, passed away in his home on Tuesday, August 28.
Born in Racine, Wis., on August 11, 1956 to Robert and Joann Nelson, he worked at K&J House of Meats and numerous factories in the Toledo area.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his sons, Jeffery and Timothy Nelson; mother, Joann Nelson; grandchildren, Jaxson and Jaycob; brothers, Michael (Dee), Steven (Nicola), Thomas and James Nelson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Nelson.
The funeral service was conducted on September 4 at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home in Maumee, followed by interment in Riverside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Anna Hawthorne, age 85, of Maumee, passed away on Wednesday, August 29.
Born in Taufkirchen, Austria, on April 9, 1933 to Johann and Maria (Pichler) Grömmer, she served during the Korean Conflict in the Diplomatic Service for the Austrian Ambassador for Germany, where she met and married her first husband, John Larkin, who passed away in 1969. She married Gerald Hawthorne in 1977. Mrs. Hawthorne obtained her U.S. citizenship under President Bill Clinton in 1993. She worked for Gladieux Banquet and Catering, DeVilbiss and General Mills, from which she retired in 1998. She was a loving mother and wife who enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her first husband, John Larkin, she was preceded in death by her second husband, Gerald Hawthorne; parents, Johann and Maria Grömmer; and siblings, Johann Grömmer, Frieda Csapo, Hilda Stöckl, Kathariana Aigner, Pauline Nutz, Irmagard Biergedder, Martha Reisinger, and Cäcilia Lasc. She is survived by her daughter, Inge (Jeff) Klopping; sons, John (Connie) Larkin and George Larkin; stepson, Ray (Kathy) Hawthorne; brother, Alios Grömmer; grandchildren, Danielle (Matt) Sprague, Dustin Klopping, Brandon (Elizabeth) Larkin, Georgianne (Aaron) Roberts, Tiffany Miller, Jeremy (Jill) Hawthorne, Jamie (Carlos) Ruiz and James (Joreen) Hensley; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and interment were private. The family suggests memorial donations to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Rd., Perrysburg, OH 43551; Peace Lutheran Church, 1021 W. Wooster St., Bowling Green, OH, 43402; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Gregory John Wingate, age 54, of Toledo, died on Monday, August 27.
Born in Toledo on July 3, 1964 to John and Mary Ann (Ashman) Wingate, he attended Gesu Elementary School and was a 1982 graduate of Central Catholic High School. He continued his education at the University Community & Technical College and received an associate’s degree in 1985 and a bachelor’s degree in administrative services from The University of Toledo in 1992. Mr. Wingate was employed as a painter for UT and Loeb Painting and often was contracted to paint on the side. He had a love for music and was a self-taught electric guitar player. He enjoyed sports and was an avid Detroit Tigers and New York Jets fan.
Surviving are his father, John; brother, Mike (Tracie); sister, Diane Yost; nieces, Tiffanie and Lindsey; nephews, Tim and Chris; great-niece, Callie; and great-nephew, Colten. He was preceded in death by his mother.
A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8 at the Walker Funeral Home in Toledo, where a memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to NAMI Greater Toledo, 2753 W. Central Ave., Toledo, OH 43606.
