Herman Gase
Herman Joseph Gase, age 86, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, surrounded by his family. Born in New Reigel, Ohio on May 22, 1931 to Norman and Clarene (Schreiner) Gase, he moved with his family to Monclova in 1942. He graduated from Monclova High School in 1949 and joined the U.S. Army, where he was a staff sergeant serving in the Korean War. After his discharge, Mr. Gase returned to Monclova, where he married Emma Bermingham in 1956 and raised their six children. He worked at Chrysler Jeep as a mechanic for more than 44 years, retiring in 1996, but his true love and passion was farming. He took pride in his farm in Monclova, which he passed on to his son, Jim. Feeling a significant pride in his community, Mr. Gase was a founding member in 1961 of the Monclova Township Fire Department, for which he was a volunteer firefighter and an EMT, retiring in 1999 after serving 38 years. He was also on the Monclova Township Zoning Board and served as chairman for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maumee, where he served as an usher, and also served as president of the Monclova Democratic Club for several years. Mr. Gase is survived by his children, Sandy (Gary) Reinhard, Randy (Joyce), Don, Jim (Chandra), Bill (Mary) and Lori (David) Grice; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Teet and Joyce Mominee; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma; parents, Norman and Clarene Gase; sister, Erma Boyd; and granddaughter, Kayla. A funeral Mass was celebrated on February 2 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, followed by interment in St. Joseph Cemetery. Kathryn Novak
Kathryn A. Novak, age 75, of Maumee, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, January 30. Born in Sharon, Pa., on December 9, 1942 to John and Katherine (Berkovich) Detelich, she received a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University and a master’s degree in special education from Westminster College in Pennsylvania. She began her teaching career in Brookfield, Ohio, and later taught in Maumee. Mrs. Novak was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maumee, where she belonged to the Rosary Altar Society, for which she held various offices and chaired the annual spaghetti dinner for many years. A Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader for both of her children, she was well known for her giving personality and kind heart. Surviving are her husband, Ronald; son, Ron Novak; daughter, Kathleen (Patrick) Farley; grandchildren, Isaac, Penny and Josie; and brother, John (Andrea) Detelich. She was preceded in death by her parents. A funeral Mass was celebrated on February 5 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, followed by interment in St. Joseph Cemetery. Vera Schrein
Vera Catherine Schrein, age 96, of Maumee, passed away on Monday, February 5. Born in Toledo on July 7, 1921 to Etny and Matilda (Schmutz) Lentz, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maumee. She enjoyed reading, music and spending time with her family. Surviving are her children, Jean (Ray) Helminski, Donna Goins and John (Sue) Schrein; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Schrein was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Schrein; sons, Charles and Donald Schrein; granddaughter, Beverly Goins; and sisters, Lucille Ford and Marie Leonard. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 8 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maumee, followed by interment in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the church or St. Joseph School.
