Maumee’s Heidbreder Goes 1-2 At NLL Tennis Tournament

BY ANDY ROWER | MIRROR SPORTS — Freshman Emily Heid-breder led Maumee’s girls tennis team at last week’s Northern Lakes League tournament by going 1-2 at third singles. Heidbreder began the tournament with a 0-6, 1-6 third singles loss to eventual Anthony Wayne runner-up Elizabeth Seiple. After rebounding with a hard-fought 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 consolation victory over Napoleon’s Maddy Spangler, Heidbreder suffered an 0-6, 1-6 loss to Northview’s eventual fourth-place finisher Jillian Turner. Fellow Panthers freshman Cazie Durham kicked things off with a 2-6, 3-6 first singles loss to Anthony Wayne’s eventual fourth-place finisher Rachelle Moses and was then outlasted by Bowling Green’s Chloe Beeker, 5-7, 3-6. At second singles, Maumee senior Parker Caesar dropped her first match 1-6, 1-6 to eventual Anthony Wayne runner-up Kailyn Szmania and then lost a 4-6, 1-6 consolation match to the eventual third-place finisher – Napoleon’s Ashley Rieger. The Panthers’ first doubles team of senior Sarah Demagall and junior Lindsey Krist began their tournament with a 1-6, 0-6 loss to Perrysburg’s eventual championship tandem of Belen Balibrea and Gemma Smith. Springfield’s Jessica Tubbs and Debbie Tann then outlasted Demagall and Krist in a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) consolation heartbreaker. Maumee’s second doubles team of junior Claire Waller and sophomore Makayla Gast first suffered a 0-6, 2-6 loss to the eventual Perrysburg championship duo of Abbie O’Connell and Lindsay Onest. Southview’s Emma Allen and Anna Salem then ended Waller and Gast’s tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Perrysburg won the tournament with 38 points and Anthony Wayne (33), Springfield (28) and Northview (20) rounded out the remainder of the tournament’s upper half. Napoleon (19), Southview (12) and Bowling Green (11) also finished ahead of the Panthers’ three points. Napoleon 5, Maumee 0 Maumee closed out its dual season with a 5-0 loss to Napoleon on September 22. Aliza Lankenau, Rieger and Spangler swept the day’s singles matches with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Durham, a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Caesar and a 7-5, 2-2 (ret.) win over Heidbreder. In doubles action, the Wildcats’ Anna Bernicke and Reilly Steffel teamed up for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Demagall and Krist and Cami Otto and Abby Hull joined forces for a 6-3, 6-3 win over Waller and Gast. The Panthers’ Durham and Krist will begin sectional play at the Toledo Tennis Club and Ottawa Hills High School on October 5 with identical nine-win seasons. Caesar, Demagall, Heidbreder and Waller have each won eight matches this year and Gast has posted seven wins.
