BY ANDY ROWER | MIRROR SPORTS — Junior forward Braden Wagener scored four goals while leading Maumee’s boys soccer team to an 8-1 win over Perkins in the Division II Lake District championship match on October 19. As expected, the No. 2 Panthers largely dominated the No. 9 Pirates from the opening to the closing whistles. Wagener scored the first goal just 3:20 into the contest, when he deflected a block by Perkins freshman goalkeeper Stone Ambos and put it into the Pirates’ net. Perkins junior Lucas Salmon answered with a miss off the Maumee post in the sixth minute, but Panthers junior forward Tyler Nayfack followed misses by seniors Jeremy Fradette and Bryan Pouter by doubling his team’s lead on a backward assist by Wagener in the 10th minute. Maumee’s Fradette and senior midfielder Nate Gauthier next traded attempts with the Pirates’ Salmon and junior Sam Myers over the next few minutes, but Ambos and the Panthers’ freshman keeper Isaac Tolbert proved up to the challenge. The scoreless streak did not last much longer, however, as Wagener posted his second goal to push the score to 3-0 in the 16th minute. Ambos likely saved another Wagener goal with a nice play out of the net in the 22nd minute, allowing Perkins to cut Maumee’s lead back down to two when Myers converted a 15-yard free kick in the 28th minute. The remainder of the stanza was all Maumee, though, as the Panthers rattled off four more goals before halftime. With Maumee players such as Fradette, fellow senior Brock Sautter, juniors Konner Byers, Sam LaChapelle and Kyle Robinson and sophomore Andrew Studenka keeping the Pirates from crossing into Panthers territory, Wagener completed his hat trick on an assist from Gauthier in the 34th minute. Not satisfied, Wagener quickly added his fourth goal on a Pouter assist in the 35th minute. Maumee’s sixth score came when a throw-in by Robinson resulted in a Pirates’ own goal in the 38th minute, before Pouter followed additional misses by Fradette, Robinson and freshman midfielder Colin Wedge with another Panthers goal in the 39th minute. Now leading 7-1, Maumee took its proverbial foot off the accelerator in the final 40:00. Fradette, Krist, LaChapelle, Tolbert, junior Adam Diegel and freshman Aidan McGann led the Panthers’ second-half defense, allowing Robinson, Sautter, Wedge, senior Cole Imm and junior Ronaldo Gomez to outshoot the Pirates’ Myers 13-1. The final Panthers goal came when senior Lucas Krist scored in the 79th minute. By game’s end, Maumee had outshot Perkins 32-6, while getting attempts from a dozen different players. Ambos finished with 14 Pirates saves and Tolbert recorded two stops. The Panthers improved to 9-6-3 with the win, which enabled them to advance on to play Bowling Green (8-9-1) in the district semifinals. Maumee narrowly defeated the Bobcats 3-2 during a September 19 game.
