BY JOEL SENSING | MIRROR SPORTS — Their season headed in the wrong direction, the Anthony Wayne baseball team needed some players to step up in its rematch game at Perrysburg on May 3. As the Rolling Stones say, “Sometimes … you get what you need,” and the Generals did as they won the ball game, 3-1. Senior Evan Brown homered, classmate Alex Vogel reached base four times and junior pitcher Brock Nartker pitched five innings of two-hit ball to stymie the Yellow Jackets on their home turf. The win came at just the right time for AW (13-5, 4-4 in the Northern Lakes League), which had lost four of its last five NLL contests. Nartker got the win as he struck out seven, allowing just an unearned run on two hits and four walks. Although he didn’t have the best control, he found ways to limit the damage. Vogel threw two innings of shutout relief, striking out one while allowing two hits. Perrysburg started out by scoring its lone run in the bottom of the first, as Connor Meredith reached on an error and then made it home an another miscue following a fly-ball error in the outfield on a ball hit by Tyson Kleinfelter. The Generals didn’t let their rivals keep the lead for long, however, as they tied it up in the top of the second when junior Andrew Murphy singled home Vogel, who had walked to open the frame. In the top of the third, Anthony Wayne took the lead for good when Vogel singled home Brown (hit by pitch), making it 2-1 AW. With one out in the seventh, Brown capped off the visitors’ scoring with his first homer of the year, a shot that cleared the left field fence, giving his team a 3-1 advantage that would soon become the final score. Vogel was 2-for-2 with two walks, the RBI and a run, while Brown was 1-for-2 with two runs and Murphy finished with two hits and the RBI. Juniors Steve Haugh and Braden Theis had the two other hits for the Generals. Junior Varsity The JV A team topped both Napoleon and Perrysburg last week to improve its record to 16-4. Connor Judy went 2-for-3 with three RBI, a steal and three runs to lead an explosive Generals attack to a 15-3 win at Napoleon on May 1. Carter Holck (two runs, RBI) and Ben Allen (two runs, two RBI) also had multiple hits for AW, which totaled nine hits and five walks in the contest. Brycen Bais was 1-for-1 with two walks and three runs, while Caden Anderson (two RBI, run) and Cam Kottenbrock (RBI, run) also had hits for the Generals. Jacob Kirby had a steal and an RBI. Vince Caraccio struck out five in four innings on the mound, giving up two earned runs on three hits and five walks. Tyler Kristufek struck out the side in a perfect fifth inning. The Generals came from behind twice to knock off visiting Perrysburg by a 4-3 score on May 3. Caraccio (two RBI) led AW at the plate with a 2-for-3 showing, while Allen (run) and Jacob Neumeyer (RBI) had the other hits. Chip Gottschalk did a nice job on the mound, striking out three while allowing three earned runs on just three hits and four walks over 6.1 innings. Mark Mattei closed things out with 0.2 innings of relief work.
